The 2009 Lower Potomac River Marathon race did not go as planned for some of the featured runners. Three time champion (2005,2006,2007), John Piggott, had car trouble and didn't make it from the hotel to the starting line. Defending champion Michael Wardian overslept with the time change, had to stop enroute for gas and then missed the turn to the start line. Wardian almost gave up on starting the race at all, but on the return found the turnoff and made it to the start line 15 minutes after the race had already begun. Chuck Engle, who was second to Piggott in 2006 and running his 12h marathon of the year, led from the start and notched his sixth win in 2:38:58. Joseph Moore, 25 of Raleigh NC, running his first marathon, finished second in 2:46:22. Michael Wardian, also running with a backpack as training for his upcoming Marathon des Sables race - chased down all but Engle and Moore to finish in third place in 2:51:22 even with his 15 minute handicap.
